Alfred W. Jones collection on Southern plantations, 1803-1861.

This collection consists of various items relating to people and plantations in Georgia. Included are a promissory note from Marquis de Montalet on Sapelo Island; another, a plantation book from Kelvin Grove, the plantation of James P. Postell on St. Simons Island, containing an allowance list, list of field hands, statement of stock, "Catalogue of Eggs - Names from Wilson's American Ornithology," and daily work schedules; and one page of a work schedule from Magnolia Place, location unknown (possibly South Carolina), including an entry for June 13 of a prayer in observance of the day set aside for fasting and prayer by President Jefferson Davis, CSA. The locations of originals of the photostats in this collection are unknown.

The Marquis de Montalet left Saint Domingo in 1797 after a slave uprising. He bought "The Hermitage" in 1798, but relocated after the death of his wife to Sapelo Island, where he owned the plantation, "le Chatelet." Kelvin Grove plantation, located on St. Simons Island, was the location of the Battle of Bloody March. The plantation was owned by the Caters family, originally from South Carolina.
